I found this place I am living in now from a lead from my sponsor in AA surprising.  But I still have to find a job and and I am dragging my feet.   I am broke and have to wait until tomorrow to do Radio Shack</title><link>http://irishbillyd.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns!41F55974CE6AF347!1006.entry</link><description>&lt;p&gt;Most of my whole life has been in and out of electronics.  I really liked Radio Shack.  I was a customer of Radio Shack as a customer way back when I was 13 years old, 50 years ago.  I enjoy dealing with the  customers of all ages coming in and solving their problems.  But, somewhere, the Shack has lost touch with their customers and their employees.  No longer do they care about either one of them.   I met my district manager and the only thing he wanted from me was to get some training thing done by the end of the day.  There was no mention of transfer.  I was so intimated, that I did not mention my transfer either.  Therefore, I am left with no option than to quit Radio Shack and look for another job closer to home since the gas prices are now $4.00 a gallon.  I can no longer afford to work in a place that I enjoy and use the skills that I have had most of my life. &lt;p&gt;Radio Shack also only cares whether one sells cell phones.  They do not want prepaid but the ones with a contract.  Once again, they don't care about the customer, but are looking for revenue coming in.  It is difficult for me to work in an environment that is against my principles.  Principles before personalities.&lt;img and he told me the next step was to get hold of the handyman for the property.  I went across the way and his words were, &amp;quot;If I see him....&amp;quot; I chose not to rely on him since I had seen him drinking beer in the afternoons.  I introduced myself to another one of the guys who turned out to be an Army veteran.  I told him I was an Army brat and my first memory was eating a piece of bread from the back seat of a car.  The next thing I knew he was going to find Mike, the handyman.  Mike showed up and tried to snake out the drain for the plumbing and had to call a plumber.  They came and fixed the plumbing.   &lt;p&gt;Had I been living with Wei, Pat would have gotten pissed off or on finally, threatened Wei with nonpayment of rent or called the plumber himself and deducted it from the rent.  So, it really is better here, after all...LOL&lt;img like landlords not fixing sewer lines at one place, and you move then you might find that you are faced with the same problem only worse at the other.  When I lived with Wei, Pat and I kept smelling sewer smell every time the dish washer would be run or the laundry would be run. &lt;p&gt;The first thing I faced was the shower was backed up.  So I thought could just pour bleach down it and solve the problem.  Well, then I used some stuff I got at Dollar General.  It seemed to have solved the problem...Then, I noticed on the way to work, the shower had leaked.  I did not know there was an overflow drain...and the drain was actually stopped up...There was a time when I had to go get a plunger for the toilet and had to plunge the toilet, because it was stopped up....it kept getting worse....Finally when I went to work I noticed that there was toilet paper all over the place.... Because there are times I tend to run around like a chicken with my head cut off. &lt;p&gt;So all of a sudden in the program, my sponsor suggested that I get in touch with this person who was going sailing and looking for someone to rent his single wide trailer.  Normally, I procrastinate with things. But, I called him. &lt;p&gt;I now have my own place.  No longer do I share a bath or kitchen.  No longer do I have to sit and watch guys drink beer in a house full of alcohol with a temptation sometimes to say fuck it and just guzzle something down.  But, I told my roommate, I did not know what would happen.  I would probably wind up in New Orleans and not know how I had got there. &lt;p&gt;It was fun at first living there: eating pizza, watching wrestling and movies. But, there were times that I found myself wincing a bit when my roommate could test my sense of propriety.  I had to wash my dishes daily just to have a dish to eat off of, now I wash them daily because I like a clean kitchen and house. &lt;p&gt;In my house, there are no mountains of pizza boxes.  In fact, I have not had a pizza since I went by to pick up mail and ate some pizza.  I put on weight blaming it on the guys...But, now I find myself eating muffins from next door at the bookstore. &lt;p&gt;But, I am able to cook salmon dinners for myself when I have time off. Monica Lin Brown saved the lives of fellow soldiers after a roadside bomb tore through a convoy of Humvees in the eastern Paktia province in April 2007, the military said.  &lt;p&gt;After the explosion, which wounded five soldiers in her unit, Brown ran through insurgent gunfire and used her body to shield wounded comrades as mortars fell less than 100 yards away, the military said.  &lt;p&gt;&amp;quot;I did not really think about anything except for getting the guys to a safer location and getting them taken care of and getting them out of there,&amp;quot; Brown told The Associated Press on Saturday at a U.S. base in the eastern province of Khost.  &lt;p&gt;Brown, of Lake Jackson, Texas, is scheduled to receive the Silver Star later this month. She was part of a four-vehicle convoy patrolling near Jani Kheil in the eastern province of Paktia on April 25, 2007, when a bomb struck one of the Humvees.  &lt;p&gt;&amp;quot;We stopped the convoy. I opened up my door and grabbed my aid bag,&amp;quot; Brown said.  &lt;p&gt;She started running toward the burning vehicle as insurgents opened fire. All five wounded soldiers had scrambled out.  &lt;p&gt;&amp;quot;I assessed the patients to see how bad they were. We tried to move them to a safer location because we were still receiving incoming fire,&amp;quot; Brown said.  &lt;p&gt;Pentagon policy prohibits women from serving in front-line combat roles — in the infantry, armor or artillery, for example. But the nature of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, with no real front lines, has seen women soldiers take part in close-quarters combat more than previous conflicts.  &lt;p&gt;Four Army nurses in World War II were the first women to receive the Silver Star, though three nurses serving in World War I were awarded the medal posthumously last year, according to the Army's Web site.  &lt;p&gt;Brown, of the 4th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, said ammunition going off inside the burning Humvee was sending shrapnel in all directions. She said they were sitting in a dangerous spot.  &lt;p&gt;&amp;quot;So we dragged them for 100 or 200 meters, got them away from the Humvee a little bit,&amp;quot; she said. &amp;quot;I was in a kind of a robot-mode, did not think about much but getting the guys taken care of.&amp;quot;  &lt;p&gt;For Brown, who knew all five wounded soldiers, it became a race to get them all to a safer location. Eventually, they moved the wounded some 500 yards away and treated them on site before putting them on a helicopter for evacuation.  &lt;p&gt;&amp;quot;I did not really have time to be scared,&amp;quot; Brown said. &amp;quot;Running back to the vehicle, I was nervous (since) I did not know how badly the guys were injured. So I am saying to myself, &amp;quot;Well, if he is backing him, I'll vote for him for sure.&amp;quot;  It really sucks how the media can fuck with your mind.  And I have to keep going to find out the truth for myself.  If I had not been taught to seek the truth at Franklin, by my father and mother, I would be in trouble and at the mercy of the media.  I used to think that that TV and Radio, and Newspaper was the media and now I know that the Internet is another media that they are addressing. True, he is quite good when it comes to captivating a crowd of sycophants and this includes the lemmings in the mainstream media. But if words matter, as Obama (and surreptitiously Duval Patrick) claims they do, then we must acknowledge that in this case words do make the man, in this case Mr. Obama must be judged in his words and in the deeds that back-up those words. &lt;p&gt;Ironically, I agree with Mr. Obama when he says that words matter. One of the harshest criticisms I have had of the Bush Administration is that communication between the presidency and the American people has been, at best, horrible. While I can lay much of the blame on a hateful mainstream media who wouldn't cover the White House if it was on fire, a gaggle of journalistic abortions hell-bent on achieving an anti-Bush/anti-Republican agenda, so too blame must be laid at the feet of an administration that failed to use all the tools available to the bully pulpit to get its message across. &lt;p&gt;Words do matter. In a society that has grown so delinquent in teaching its populace critical thinking skills, words -- and the choice of words -- have become the upper-tier chess pieces in the tactical game of attaining and holding on to power. Of course, this is nothing new. &lt;p&gt;Great people through time have understood the importance of words, their meaning and their successful communication. Cicero, Aristotle, Plato, John Locke and Thomas Hobbes certainly knew the importance of words. Through their philosophy the seeds of our uniquely American ideology were planted. Those who understood the importance of their message, their words -- Franklin, Adams, Jefferson and Madison -- were able to manifest the American experience, to motivate a people to the quest of freedom and liberty. These great men -- our Founders and Framers -- also had a penchant for words as is evidenced by the Charters of Freedom, which stand alone in their ideology of liberty. &lt;p&gt;But just as there were great people who used words to move humanity to good, so too were their very evil, narcissistic men who used words to manipulate masses of people into ideologies of oppression and inequity, who used words to capture power from people, who used words to steal liberty, usurping the Natural Law of man. &lt;p&gt;Adolph Hitler used words to cajole a nation into ceding their collective will to a tyranny that would affect a litany of horrors perpetrated on the innocent, simply because of their religions, their skin colors and their birth origins. Josef Stalin used words to motivate an oppressive class to -- as we now understand -- eclipse the horrors of Hitler. And the totalitarian rhetoric of Pol Pot and Chairman Mao Zedong served to ideologically and physically imprison generations of people from freedom while filling graves beyond capacity. &lt;p&gt;While the tyrants and murderers listed above left their legacies in blood, slaughter and the destruction of humanity, still other despots -- ideological despots -- worked to enslave the minds of millions of people. &lt;p&gt;One such ideological despot is Karl Marx, whose code of belief culminated in the Marxist-Leninist dogma of Communism, commonly considered a faction of the broader Socialist Movement. This oppressive ideology brutally discouraged liberty of the individual, many times to the point of torture and execution, and placed the State above all else. The goal of this oppressive and maniacal creed, a socio-political system in which property, the rights of the individual and the distribution of wealth were subject to control by the community; &amp;quot;It takes a village to raise a child.&amp;quot; &lt;p&gt;Today, we experience the pain of Marxist-Leninist ideology in the unlegislated tenets of political correctness, a belief system that has crept into the mainstream thinking of the Democrat, Progressive-Left political community. &lt;p&gt;Yes, words -- and the deeds that ratify words -- do matter. It is because of this truth that two issues surrounding the life and candidacy of Barack Obama strike me as disturbing. &lt;p&gt;Let me reiterate something that I stated in a recent piece, Can an American President Be a Muslim Apostate. I believe Barack Obama when he says that he is a Christian. I do not subscribe to the idea that he is a &amp;quot;clandestine jihadi&amp;quot; just waiting to be inaugurated so that he can hand the country over to Wahhabism. That said, it really doesn't matter what Barack Obama declares at all. What matters is what the fundamentalist Islamists believe. What matters are the words of their belief system. &lt;p&gt;To a fundamentalist Wahhabi -- the belief system of Osama bin Laden, Ayman al Zawahiri, the Muslim Brotherhood and the Saudi royal family -- Barack Obama is a Muslim apostate and, therefore, lower than any other form of human life. In the ideology of Wahhabism Obama's punishment for leaving his Muslim birthright is death and he is not to be seen as an equal under any circumstances. Further, by the Wahhabist tent of al Taqiyya, it would be permissible for a fundamentalist Islamist, i.e. the Saudi royals, etc, to disregard any accords or treaties made with Obama. It would be permissible and, in fact, encouraged, to deceive the &amp;quot;infidel&amp;quot; in an effort to promote the well being of Islam and Muslims anywhere and everywhere. &lt;p&gt;That said, the words of the Wahhabists matter more than Barack Obama's declaration of Christian faith. &lt;p&gt;To remain in the realm of religion, we need to address Barack Obama's own words when it comes to his past, specifically his declaration that he was not influenced by his &amp;quot;brief&amp;quot; Islamic indoctrination. &lt;p&gt;Recently Jonah Goldberg wrote about a 2007 New York Times interview of Barack Obama with Nicholas Kristof, who documented, &lt;p&gt;&lt;i&gt;&amp;quot;Mr. Obama recalled the opening lines of the Arabic call to prayer, reciting them with a first-rate accent. In a remark that seemed delightfully uncalculated...Mr. Obama described the call to prayer as 'one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.'&amp;quot;&lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;For someone who wasn't &amp;quot;influenced&amp;quot; by his &amp;quot;brief&amp;quot; stint in the Islamic faith, Mr. Obama certainly has command of a difficult language (words) and fond memories of a prayer that translated literally means,  &lt;p&gt;&lt;i&gt;&amp;quot;Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah. I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Hasten to the Prayer, hasten to the Prayer. Hasten to real success, hasten to real success. Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is none worthy of worship but Allah.&amp;quot; &lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;Of course, these are &amp;quot;just words,&amp;quot; like, &amp;quot;I have a dream...&amp;quot; and &amp;quot;...We hold these truths to be self evident...&amp;quot; &lt;p&gt;Another disturbing element to Barack Obama's past is his loose association with William Ayers, a former member of the domestic terror group the Weather Underground. Ayers and his Weather Underground terrorists bombed the US Capitol building, The Pentagon and the US State Department building. The group literally declared war on the United States. In a September 11, 2001 New York Times interview (strange how these &amp;quot;words&amp;quot; always grace the pages of the New York Times) Ayers said of the bombings,  &lt;p&gt;&lt;i&gt;&amp;quot;I don't regret setting bombs; I feel we didn't do enough.&amp;quot;&lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;In 1995, Barack Obama, in the Chicago tradition of paying respect to political &amp;quot;Godfathers,&amp;quot; paid homage to Williams Ayers, doing so at Ayers' residence on the commencement of Obama's political career. In essence, Barack Obama courted the political blessing of a self-avowed domestic terrorist who holds no regrets that he declared war on his own country; &lt;i&gt;&amp;quot;I don't regret setting bombs; I feel we didn't do enough.&amp;quot;&lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;Of course, these are &amp;quot;just words,&amp;quot; just words like, &lt;p&gt;&lt;i&gt;&amp;quot;When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.&amp;quot;&lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;Or... &lt;p&gt;&lt;i&gt;&amp;quot;We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity...&amp;quot;&lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;Or... &lt;p&gt;&lt;i&gt;&amp;quot;It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us--that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion--that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain--that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom--and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.&amp;quot;&lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;Yes, words matter, Mr. Obama, they matter quite a bit...and so far your words -- through your speech and your deeds -- ring hollow of substance. Bush's political demeanor seems little more than stumbling tautology. He utters his campaign message in clipped phrases, filled with bravado and repeated references to God, and to resoluteness of purpose. But to a trained eye and ear these performances have the deliberate balance of a country singer at the Grand Ole Opry.  &lt;p&gt;&lt;img height=341 src="http://opinionjournal.com/extra/102304scotsirish.jpg" width=169 align=left&gt;Speaking in a quasirural dialect that his critics dismiss as affected, W. is telling his core voting groups that he is one of them. No matter that he is the product of many generations of wealth; that his grandfather was a New England senator; that his father moved the family's wealth South just like the hated Carpetbaggers after the Civil War; that he himself went North to Andover and Yale and Harvard when it came time for serious grooming. And as with the persona, so also with the key issues. The Bush campaign proceeds outward from a familiar mantra: strong leadership, success in war, neighbor helping neighbor, family values, and belief in God. Contrary to many analyses, these issues reach much farther than the oft-discussed Christian right. The president will not win re-election without carrying the votes of the Scots-Irish, along with those others who make up the &amp;quot;Jacksonian&amp;quot; political culture that has migrated toward the values of this ethnic group.  &lt;p&gt;At the same time, few key Democrats seem even to know that the Scots-Irish exist, as this culture is so adamantly individualistic that it will never overtly form into one of the many interest groups that dominate Democratic Party politics. Indeed, it can be fairly said that Al Gore lost in 2000 because the Democrats ignored this reality and the Scots-Irish enclaves of West Virginia and Tennessee turned against him.  &lt;p&gt;&lt;img height=6 alt="" hspace=0 src="http://opinionjournal.com/images/storyend_dingbat.gif" width=88 align=center border=0&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Why are the 30 million Scots-Irish, who may well be America's strongest cultural force, so invisible to America's intellectual elites? It is commonplace for commentators to lump together those who are descended from British roots into the WASP culture typified by New England Brahmins, or the Irish, who are overwhelmingly Catholic. But it is political nonsense to consider the Scots-Irish as part of either.  &lt;p&gt;The Scots-Irish are derived from a mass migration from Northern Ireland in the 1700s, when the Calvinist &amp;quot;Ulster Scots&amp;quot; decided they'd had enough of fighting Anglican England's battles against Irish Catholics. One group settled initially in New Hampshire, spilling over into modern-day Vermont and Maine. The overwhelming majority--95%--migrated to the Appalachians in a series of frontier communities that stretched from Pennsylvania to northern Alabama and Georgia. They eventually became the dominant culture of the South and much of the Midwest.  &lt;p&gt;True American-style democracy had its origins in this culture. Its values emanated from the Scottish Kirk, which had thrown out the top-down hierarchy of the Catholic Church and replaced it with governing councils made up of ordinary citizens. This mix of fundamentalist religion and social populism grew from a people who for 16 centuries had been tested through constant rebellions against centralized authority. The Scots who headed into the feuds of 17th-century Ulster, and then into the backlands of the American frontier, hardened further into a radicalism that proclaimed that no man had a duty to obey a government if its edicts violated his moral conscience.  &lt;p&gt;Matched with this rebelliousness was a network of extended family &amp;quot;clans,&amp;quot; still evident among the Scots-Irish, built on an egalitarianism that measured a person by their own code of honor, courage, loyalty and audacious leadership. Noted Scottish professor T.C. Smout said it best when he observed that these relationships were &amp;quot;compounded both of egalitarian and patriarchal features, full of respect for birth while being free from humility.&amp;quot; They demanded strong leaders, but would never tolerate one who considered himself above his fellows. Andrew Jackson, the first president of Scots-Irish descent, forever changed the style of American politics, creating a movement that even today is characterized as Jacksonian democracy.  &lt;p&gt;The Scots-Irish comprised a large percentage of Reagan Democrats, and contributed heavily to the &amp;quot;red state&amp;quot; votes that gave Mr. Bush the presidency in 2000. The areas with the highest Scots-Irish populations include New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, northern Florida, Mississippi, Arkansas, northern Louisiana, Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, southern Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, and parts of California, particularly Bakersfield. The &amp;quot;factory belt,&amp;quot; especially around Detroit, also has a strong Scots-Irish mix.  &lt;p&gt;&lt;img height=6 alt="" hspace=0 src="http://opinionjournal.com/images/storyend_dingbat.gif" width=88 align=center border=0&gt;  &lt;p&gt;The Scots-Irish political culture is populist and inclusive, which has caused other ethnic groups to gravitate toward it. Country music is its cultural emblem. It is family-oriented. Its members are values-based rather than economics-based: they often vote on emotional issues rather than their pocketbooks. Because of their heritage of &amp;quot;kinship,&amp;quot; they're strangely unenvious of wealth, and measure leaders by their personal strength and values rather than economic position. They have a 2,000-year-old military tradition based on genealogy, are the dominant culture of the military and the Christian right, and define the character of blue-collar America. They are deeply patriotic, having consistently supported every war America has fought, and intensely opposed to gun control--an issue that probably cost Mr. Gore both his home state of Tennessee and traditionally Democratic West Virginia in 2000.  &lt;p&gt;The GOP strategy is heavily directed toward keeping peace with this culture, which every four years is seduced by the siren song of guns, God, flag, opposition to abortion and success in war. By contrast, over the past generation the Democrats have consistently alienated this group, to their detriment.  &lt;p&gt;The Democrats lost their affinity with the Scots-Irish during the civil rights era, when--because it was the dominant culture in the South--its &amp;quot;redneck&amp;quot; idiosyncrasies provided an easy target during their shift toward minorities as the foundation of their national electoral strategy. Their long-term problem in having done so is twofold. First, it hampers their efforts to carry almost any Southern state. And second, the Scots-Irish culture has strong impact outside the South. This is especially strong in many battleground states. It is no accident that many political observers call the central region in Pennsylvania &amp;quot;northern Alabama.&amp;quot; Scots-Irish traditions play heavily in New Hampshire--the only New England state that Mr. Bush carried in 2000. Large numbers of Scots-Irish settled in the southern regions of Ohio (called &amp;quot;northern Kentucky&amp;quot;), Indiana and Illinois. They were among the principal groups to settle Missouri and Colorado. They migrated heavily to the industrial areas in Michigan, which is one reason that George Wallace, ran so strongly in that state in 1968 and 1972.  &lt;p&gt;But other than with those who identify with the Christian right, it would be wrong to think that the Republicans have their firm loyalty. For every Lee Atwater or Karl Rove who understands the Scots-Irish, there are others who privately disdain them. And sometimes not so privately--the most vicious ethnic slur of the presidential campaign came from Charles Krauthammer, after Howard Dean suggested that the Democrats needed to reach out to the &amp;quot;guys with the Confederate flags on their pickup trucks.&amp;quot; Mr. Krauthammer, who has never complained about this ethnic group when it has marched off to fight the wars he wishes upon us, wrote that Mr. Dean &amp;quot;wants the white trash vote . . . that's clearly what he meant,&amp;quot; and that he was pandering to &amp;quot;rebel-yelling racist rednecks.&amp;quot;  &lt;p&gt;&lt;img height=6 alt="" hspace=0 src="http://opinionjournal.com/images/storyend_dingbat.gif" width=88 align=center border=0&gt;  &lt;p&gt;As with other ethnic groups, those inside the culture know how to read such code words, and there may come a time when the right Democratic strategist knows how to counter them in the manner that Mr. Dean contemplated. John Edwards is at his visceral best when his campaign rhetoric seems directed at doing that.  &lt;p&gt;The decline in public education and the outsourcing of jobs has hit this culture hard. Diversity programs designed to assist minorities have had an unequal impact on white ethnic groups and particularly this one, whose roots are in a poverty-stricken South. Their sons and daughters serve in large numbers in a war whose validity is increasingly coming into question.
